Political figures and scholars in South Africa on Friday called for peace and reconciliation in Libya after the killing of Muammar Gaddafi, a long-time leader of the country.South Africa senior political economist called Africa Union (AU) and Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) to immediately institute authentic democratic Libya based on economic and social policy reflection. He said NTC must avoid adopting ""Washington's agenda"" in the process of establish a government in Tripoli.Patrick Bond, a Johns Hopkins University professor, said Africa' s longest serving dictator who killed many of his people, deserved a fair ""trial"".""Since Muammar Gaddafi lived by the sword, killing so many of his own subjects - and acting in a rapacious way in relation to Africa - that it is not surprising he was killed by his people,"" Bond, a political economy and eco-social policy lecturer at KZN University, said in an written interview with Xinhua.""However, he really did deserve a trial. An act of murder by armed thugs is never pretty,"" the 2003 visiting professor at York University Department of Political Science told Xinhua. In September, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) backed rebel combatants' overpowered Gaddafi loyalists' force invading his Tripoli compound. He managed to escape to Sirte, his hometown, with a number of defensive loyalists who waged strong resists against NATO and NTC forces till his Thursday capture while trying to hide in a drainage pipe.In February this year, enormous revolt engulfed Libyan capital and other big cities as people demanded Gaddafi to abdicate power he enjoyed for 42- years. Protesters clashed with armed state securities resulting to many casualties. As violence continued degenerating into war many people died. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to authorize a no-fly zone over Libya and ""all necessary measures,"" excluding troops on the ground, to protect civilians under threat of attack in the country. On March 19, Western powers led by France and Washington at a summit on Libya held in Paris announced the start of military action against Libyan government forces. NATO backed civilians who regarded themselves as ""rebels"" increasingly gained military strength determined to oust Gaddafi.Later in September the African Union recognized the NTC.""AU and NTC must establish a genuinely democratic state with an economic and social policy that reflects democracy and justice, not Washington's agenda,"" Bond said.South Africa Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRC) spokesperson Clayson Monyela on Thursday in a statement issued after news about Gaddafi's death said Pretoria hopes that the death of Gaddafi will lead to a cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace.""We urge the NTC to begin in earnest the process of building national unity and reconciliation as well as the disarmament of all combatants and their reintegration into society,"" Monyela said.He said South Africa remains committed to work together with the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Conference to ensure coordinated support to the NTC and the Libyan people in general in their endeavors to reconstruct their country and to bring about democratic, political and socio-economic changes. He said, in a decent, just world, NATO leader and Western rulers would somehow make amends for over-reaching on their UN mandate - which was just to provide air protection against Gaddafi attacks on Bengazi - and pay reparations for all the destruction caused in constant bombing raids.
