It is actually a lwa that when one is laid off from their job that they have the option to keep their current health insurance. This is called   Cobra Insurance  and while it seems like a great idea, only about 1 in 5 people actually take the option. The reason is because you are responsible for paying the entire premium as opposed to only half or less of it when you were employed. A more affordable option is private heath insurance for many.
