I got a chance to play around with the Ipad yesterday. I found the drag and drop menu easy to use. The virtual keypad was neat though I had to hover over it so I wouldn't touch the keys. As an ebook author I love the ebook format which looks like you're turning pages. This works great due to the touch screen feature. So what's wrong with the Apple IPad...?

Limited FeaturesThere's no memory card slot or anywhere you can place a USB flash drive to add more ebooks or music. Though the virtual keypad is neat, I believe hovering over the keys with my carpal tunneled hand will get old real fast. The virtual keypad also takes away half the screen. I'd really like to see a firewire or usb slot where a keyboard could be plugged in to the IPad.
The Price of The IPad$700.00 for a first generation product with less features than the next generation! Compare that to a netbook computer for $250 to $350
In Fact Let's Compare The IPad to a NetbookFor those of you that don't know it, a netbook computer is a small laptop computer with a small screen, 7 inches to 10 inches and no additional features such as a CD or DVD player. On first glance this appears to be a disadvantage, but what does the netbook computer have that the IPad doesn't? USB ports!
The USB ports, not found on the IPad, offer all types of extensions available at any electronic or computer store. To name a few of the extensions which are NOT found on the IPad:
Full size keyboard - Though the keys are already full size on a netbook computer with the less used keys made smaller, you can plug in a full size USB keyboard and use it right away with NO software install necessary!
DVD/CD/Blu-ray reader writer - Any software install needed can be download from the internet via the built in wireless adapters that come with all netbook computers!
External mouse - Again No software is needed to use an external mouse which replace the touch keypad which comes with a netbook computer.
But The Netbook Screen is So Small...!Well you got me there, OH WAIT! All laptop computers including the netbook computers come with a slot to plug in as large of an external monitor as you like!
The IPad Has Those Great Apps...!Have you surfed the internet lately? Everything you need is downloadable from free to affordable and has been out there long before the iphone or IPad "created apps". You can download using the wi fi adapter. Some netbooks even come with built in wifi!
Even the ebook readers including the ebook reader for the IPad is or will be available to the netbook computer. That's the beauty of the internet and the free market!
But I Can Use Touch Screen with the IPad...!Okay now you truly have me. If you want to spend two to three times the amount of money on a product with less capabilities and less adaptation than the netbook computer feel free to touch away. I'll save my money and use a mouse.
ConclusionDon't get caught in the hype of any new product. I generally find the first of anything to be flawed in some manner and fully dependent on being the first one out there with features to woo the crowd.
