Hi Brad,
Thanks for your input here.

"I also wanted to post a resource that other writers here may find of interest that another colleague of mine in another forum turned me on to. It's
www.createspace.com. Now most of you may have heard of the Amazon.com off shoot. I had not. It's where writers, artists and filmmakers come together to create products of their chosen craft."
I signed up for a membership with createspace and spent the last hour checking out what they have to offer to someone wanting to self publish a book.
Firstly the tools they supply for submitting content seem to be OK. However anybody with a bit of knowledge in PDF creation can do the same with the free PDF creation tools within the MyScribeWeb membership site - including audio. For those who know nothing about PDF creation you can buy e-WriterPro for $7.97 at:
http://www.myscribeweb.com/WriteYourOwnE-Books/index.html Secondly besides very strict book size constraints I just can not get over their fees.
Please correct me if I am wrong in my calculations:
I used a book that I am currently working on for the calculations.
For a book of 828 pages:
Print Cost $18.06
Then 20% of list price to have the book sold via createspace or
40% of list price to have the book sold via Amazon.
Not sure but I think you have to sell via one of them to use the services.
I would choose Amazon as I believe Amazon would get more traffic.
Now let's say I wanted to sell my book for US$30 [list price].
Less $18.06 [print cost] = $11.94 - $12 [40% list cost to Amazon] = $1.00
Then as an Australian citizen I would have to pay two lots of sales tax
{aus 10% + US?let's assume 10%} =-$6 + $1.00 = -$5.00.
That's a loss of US$5.00 per copy!
Now if I increased the list price to $56, using the same figures as above
I would make $4.34 per copy!
On top of all that they do not offer a discount on volume orders you might like to make on your own book.
HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO SELF PUBLISHING VIA POD [Print On Demand]
I got a recent Australian POD quote for the same book at US$3.00 per book print.
So if I go back to my original list price of US$30.
Less %10 AU Tax = $27.
less $3.00 Print costs = $24
Less $0.75 PayPal fees = US$23.25
*So Publishing via createspace I would have to sell my book at US$56 to make US$4.34 per copy.
*Self publishing via POD [Print On Demand] I can sell my book at US$30 to make $23.25.
Print On Demand services charge the customer shipping charges and deliver the book. You pay them to print a book every time one is ordered - or you can get the books printed at an even cheaper rate if you order and pay for larger print lots in advance.
Really the only advantages that I can see in selling your books through someone like createspace and amazon is their ability to professionally present your book online. I can see no evidence of them promoting your book via book fairs etc. So you would still have to do your own promotional work.
Presenting your book online is something you can learn to do as well as, if not better than they do.
This is the purpose of MyScribeWeb.com
Writers need Web Builders or web building skills, to promote their books Online.
You have all the resources to do so in the MyScribeWeb membership area.
Brad could you please let the readers here know which POD company you are using?
It is advisable to use the POD services within your own country otherwise you may have to pay
double taxes.
So far I have had no personal experience with POD publishing as my work so far has been published by Watermark Press.
However I want to try POD with my next Novel, [in progress now for over three years]. I am currently looking at quotes here in Australia.
Cheers,
Kitty.
