Note From The Editor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to another issue of the Book Marketing Expert Newsletter!
Dear Author,
I'm writing you today from Book Expo America, on the eve of one of the biggest events in publishing. The AME team is all here in fabulous New York and we're ready to rock and roll at the Javits center where the event is held. Publishers and authors will present their most exciting Fall titles and you never know who you'll see walking the aisles of Book Expo. It's another chance to celebrate books, authors, and publishing. With that in mind, I thought I would address the new how-to's of publishing. The rules have changed (yet again) and you've got a whole new set of tools to help you find a publisher, agent, and see your work in print. And since this is a networking event, I'm also including a few tips to remember when going to *any* networking or business social event.
I hope you enjoy this issue and watch our blog for Book Expo updates!
In the last issue, we had the incorrect address for Geek Monthly, so we wanted to set the record straight. Contact Geek Monthly at:
Making the Sale
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now more than ever, if you want to make the sale you've got to be persuasive. But not so persuasive that it seems you're begging for the sale or (God forbid) sucking up. Frankly, consumers hate both.

1) Name dropping: while most of us find name dropping obnoxious, this is one time when it's not only permitted, it's encouraged. If you have an impressive list of testimonials, blurbs, or clients be sure and list them. If you're not sure which ones to list and which to drop (lucky you if you have too many to chose from) then collaborate with someone who can be objective and offer decisive feedback. This first step is very critical and often overlooked. In fact I've been guilty of it. Some months back a friend of mine pointed to all the bestsellers we've worked on. "Why aren't these listed on your site?" Well, they were but we had yet to highlight their success. Why? Because we were too close to our own message. An objective eye is often crucial to help you determine what to highlight and emphasize that will bring you sales.

2) Testimonials: let's face it, people like what other people like, so if you have folks who say good things about your book, business or whatever it is you're selling you should emphasize that.

3) Stories: people love stories. If you have a great success story be sure and share it on your web site. If you don't have a good story (yet) you can always start gathering them. There's no time like the present to get started.

Featured Article-New Ways to Find a Publisher
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In an age of new media where the rules are changing faster than we can write them, it would make sense that publishing rules are changing too, wouldn't it? Does it still make sense to query an agent, go to conferences and network with other writers? Or should you just sit home and blog and hope someone finds you online? Truth be told, it's a combination of all of it. Sites like Twitter have really leveled the playing field. If used effectively, Twitter can really help you to leverage your market. You don't have to be a superstar when you start on Twitter but you can certainly become one by being on it. Then of course there's blogging, and social networking, video and on and on. So what should a budding author do to get noticed? Or, perhaps you have self-published a book and want to get a mainstream house to pick it up. The key here is to first identify your goals, then find ways to go after them both online and off.
Queries, do they make sense?
Yes they do. Publishing still lives by a few standards and this is one of them. There is a process and you should still respect it. This doesn't mean that you won't wake up someday to an email from a publisher or agent who has read your blog and wants to publish it (yes, some publishers will publish blogs) but until that happens, the submission process is a sacred, old world tradition that isn't likely to go away anytime soon.
Does networking matter?
Yes but here's the good news. You don't have to fly around the country to every conference to do this. You can network right from your own home. The key is to find a network that works, and stay connected. That network could be on Twitter, Facebook, Squidoo, it could even be through your blog, other blogs you follow or, an old fashioned email connection. Whatever it is, it's easier than ever these days to stay in touch with people without having to hop a plane to do so.
Facebook strategies, what will get you noticed?
Social networking is a great way to get noticed but if you're using the page as your own personal go-to site for friends and family, then you're not using it to its full potential. Design your Facebook page to support your work: make sure your blog is feeding to Facebook, keep the site updated with current projects, events, you can even use it to become a filter if necessary. The key is, use Facebook as your professional resume. You should also consider "friending" people who are in similar industries, you can even go in and friend a publisher or two, you never know where this Facebook friendship could lead.
What's considered a "good" online presence?
A good online presence is one that helps build your platform. So a web site and blog, a social networking page and if you're really ready to push yourself online, maybe even a Twitter account. You should also consider a newsletter sign-up on your home page or an RSS feed to your blog. Publishers like to see when authors are building their tribe and once you start adding subscribers, you can also mention this to the publishers you're pitching.
What are the key pieces that publishers find attractive in a new author?
Your book is your resume: if you decide to self-publish as a means to get the book out there and/or find a publisher, remember that your book really is your resume. You would never send a resume to a potential employer that was full of typos, right? You should never send a book out into the world that isn't letter perfect. The quickest way to get noticed is by publishing quality work, the quickest way to get dismissed is by producing junk. Second, they want an author who knows his or her market and, if you're connected to it online, all the better.
Do publishers really care about all of this stuff?
You bet they do. When a publisher is considering an author, they will often look at the author's "reach" or platform, you can start pulling this together by working your Internet base, building your followers and getting buzz going on your book or topic even before it's published.
So what can I do right now to get started?
1) Get a web site
2) Start a blog
3) Get to know your online community, where do they hang out, what blogs do they read. You should be reading and commenting on those blogs. Get to know your virtual neighbors.
4) Find out how you can be of service. This is particularly true of non-fiction authors: find out what the need is and figure out how to fill that need. There's no quicker way to becoming a trusted resource than by becoming a trusted source.
The Internet has really leveled the playing field when it comes to getting published, getting noticed, and building a platform. With some marketing and careful effort, you can build your platform/audience base, and gain some much needed attention for your work. The years of sitting in some publisher's slush pile are gone. Now, thanks to sites like Facebook, Squidoo, and Twitter you can cultivate a voice, audience and, if you're lucky, even a publisher!
7 Things to do Before, During and Right After a Networking Event
1) Make sure you have enough business cards. I know this sounds sort of like a no-brainer but you'd be amazed how many times folks show up without business cards.
2) Make sure and have a pen with you at all these events. When you talk to someone and get their card, jot a few quick notes on the back so you remember what you talked about. If you don't I can almost guarantee you'll forget by the time you get home.
3) If there is a meal served, be sure to sit with people you don't know and introduce yourself. It's easy to make conversation with people you know, even better to network with people you've never met.
4) Send a quick handwritten note after the event: while it's easy to point and click and send an email, send a handwritten note instead.
5) Facebook friend them: when you get home be sure and send a friend request to your networking buddy.
6) Follow them on Twitter: it's always a good idea to become one of their Twitter tribe if they're on Twitter
7) If they have a blog, subscribe to their RSS feed so you can keep track of what they're writing about. From time to time be sure and chime in by leaving a comment on their blog!
Book Bits and Bites
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arrggh, A Deal's A Brewin': Capt. Richard Phillips's book deal is in the works; he was the leader of the Maersk Alabama, the ship highjacked by Somali pirates, and he gave himself up as a hostage so his crew could go free. A war is underway for his book, with bidding reaching a rumored $500,000, according to Publisher's Weekly. Publishers Weekly Article

On-demand Tops Traditional Titles: It was a mixed bag for book publishing in 2008; the number of titles traditionally published fell while the number of self-published titles grew. Publishers Weekly reported on the Bowker study, which noted that the number of new and revised titles produced by traditional production methods fell by 3%, to 275,232, while the number of on-demand and short run titles used by self-publishers and online publishers soared 132%, to 285,394. On Demand Titles

Say What? Are there certain words that drive you over the edge? Others that roll off your tongue with delight? An Albany Times-Union columnist struck a chord with many with her column, Words we Love, Words We Hate. Good words: love, serendipity, peace, grace. Bad words: hate, no, panties, ointment. Check it out! Times Union Article

Amazon Jumps into the Publishing Pan: AmazonEncore will publish its first title, the fantasy Legacy, in August. This new publishing program will focus on self-published books, but could include out-of-print titles from major houses. The company says a combination of sales data and customer feedback helps them choose AmazonEncore titles. Based on the Publisher Weekly's report, Amazon has not yet decided how many books it will publish annually. Amazon Publishing

Are You Blogging at the Wrong Time?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When it comes to blogging, timing is everything. We often see this in the popularity of blogs based on what time they are posted. But how can you be sure you're posting at the right time? There's a rule of thumb that says post early by EST standards. Around 8 am EST is generally a good time, that tends to be peak time for surfers reading blogs. But your site may have an entirely different demographic. So why would you care about timing your blogs? Well first off, you want to be sure and maximize the traffic and pull more readers into your blog. Also, in order to maximize the viral aspect of your posts, you want to capture as much attention for them as you can. Posting them when traffic peaks on your site will always be your best bet.
In order to start your research, I recommend getting your web site stats and reviewing when the bulk of traffic visits your site. Studies show that traffic peaks during early hours and mostly weekdays, but you might find an entirely different perspective. For the Author Marketing Experts site I found that traffic tends to increase over the weekends when weekend-warrior writers are knuckling down to finish and publish their books. Also, if you're looking to capture some noontime traffic, I've read a few blogs that say putting up a YouTube video just before noon when many folks go a-surfin' is a great way to pull in additional traffic.
Timing your posts to match traffic might seem like a small thing, but the benefits to your site and the viral-ness of your message can be huge!
Current Topics And Buzz Words
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You've written this great novel about sex in politics but you are having trouble selling your "Fiction" idea to morning show or news producers. What better way than to tie your topic into a steamy political sex scandal in the news, or to a current misuse of political power at the top or to a local legislative story that corresponds to a theme in your book? The best situation is if you actually have a background in politics because who better to talk dirty politics than an insider! Everybody likes secrets and behind the scenes stories, so use it if you've got it!

Some of the buzz words and topics that interest producers today are anything "Green," "Empowerment," "Politics," "Re-inventing yourself," "Unusual jobs," "Money," "Health," "Anti-Aging," "Famous People," "Relationships."

Remember think current. Think outside the box. Think about the majority and what interests them. Think drama and reality television. Think like a producer. Enjoy!

Social Media Time-Savers

Flock: http://www.flock.com/, is a fully integrated social media browser that lets you see your most recent updates from Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Delicious, and YouTube. Install it and forget it, it'll run your feeds, show you who's updated their status (in case you want to make a comment) and also give you status updates on your Twitter account (and the others mentioned). It's a great place to centralize everything.

Minggl: http://www.minggl.com/, is a Firefox add-on (also works on IE) that lets you connect to your social sites and view all of the updates. You can also use the sidebar feature to update all of your sites at once.

Do You Optimize Your Images for the Web?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Social networking is an important part of getting added exposure for your book and often calls for the need to upload an image like your picture and/or your book cover. Or perhaps you upload images to your newsletter or your blog. Then you'll want to be sure and optimize those images. This can be an issue if you do not have some type of photo editing software like PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements. There is an easy-to-use alternative that anyone can use from anywhere: http://www.webresizer.com/.
Check it out: this nifty photo resizer allows you to reduce your image size, crop photos, sharpen an image, and much more. This is one tool you'll want to add to your bookmarks for future use. Have fun!!
Keep Reading: New Sites Let You Read and Return Books
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While I always try and encourage new book purchases, as it turns out the sluggish economy has forced a lot of readers to dig out and dust off their library cards. In fact librarians tell us that there is often a line-up for newly released titles from readers hungry to get their hands on them without putting out the money for a purchase. It's nice to see people returning to libraries, but if you want some options check out some of the "read and return" sites that are popping up online:

Paperbackswap.com: http://www.paperbackswap.com/, with more than 1 million books up for trade with other members the choices are endless. Mailing fees are paid for by the sender. You can log on and list your own books.

BookMooch: http://bookmooch.com/, similar to Paperbackswap, only international. Also with BookMooch you can donate points to literacy campaigns and charities.

BookSwim.com: http://www.bookswim.com/, describes itself as the Netflix of books. From their web site: BookSwim is the first online book rental library service lending you paperbacks, hardcovers and now college textbooks Netflix®-style directly to your house, without the need to purchase! We stock all the latest bestsellers, new releases, and classics with free shipping both ways! Read your books as long as you want - no late fees! Even choose to purchase and keep the books you love!

Why Print Marketing Pieces Still Make Sense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of you probably know that we're an almost-all Internet company. While we still do traditional marketing and publicity, we believe that the Internet is the best way to get your marketing message out there. Yet we still believe in print marketing pieces. Why? Because while online communication is significant, don't underestimate the power of the printed piece.
Postcards, for example are still a big piece of how we market ourselves. We often send oversized postcards to agents and publishers because we think an oversized postcard (when done right) gets the kind of attention an email blast doesn't. Also, because spam filters have been known to swallow Tokyo, the bolster of an added print piece to your marketing campaign makes sense. When your emails don't get there, a printed marketing piece likely will. Also, while ebooks and all sorts of digital media are all the rage, studies show that we do process print better. So when planning how to market your book, consider blending both the on- and off-line worlds for an even better and more successful campaign!
